24 countries, 8 venues, 4 cities, and 50 matches – the 2019 AFC Asian Cup is nothing short of a global spectacle. The 17th edition of the tournament houses some of the most improved footballing nations in the world, and fans are excited as ever to see their respective countries in action.

Like every other tournament, Asian Cup, too, banks on goals and excitement to sell tickets, and these five players on our list come as blessings to the tournament organisers. Here are five players with the most number of international goals in the AFC Asian Cup.

5. Teerasil Dangda – 43 Goals – Thailand

Teerasil Dangda

Teerasil Dangda is an irreplaceable cog in the Thailand national football team. Not only is he their indomitable skipper, but he also is one of their most reliable players in front of goal. Dangda, who currently plays for Sanfreece Hiroshima in the J-League, has already gotten off to the mark in the tournament, scoring the only Thai goal in their 4-1 defeat to India.

4. Ahmed Khalil – 47 Goals – UAE

Ahmed Khalil Aljunaibi

The hosts may not be the outright tournament favourites, but they do still possess one of the most decorated attacks in the tournament. The Shabab Al Ahli forward has really stepped up to the plate in Omar Abdulrahman’s absence and has led the team from the front.

He got off to the mark with a well-struck penalty against Bahrain but was an unused substitute in the 2-0 win over India.

3. Ali Ahmed Mabkhout – 47 Goals – UAE

Ali Ahmed Mabkhout

The Al Jazira star has been one of UAE’s best players since breaking onto the scene in 2012. Known for his daunting runs and clever movement, Mabkhout always finds a way to trouble the opposition and we don’t expect anything different this year, as well.

The forward, who won the Golden Boot for scoring five goals in the 2015 Asian Cup, has scored one goal and provided one assist, this year.

2. Phil Younghusband – 52 Goals – Philippines

The Filipino-British forward has been a mainstay in the Philippines national team for more than half a decade. He doesn’t come off as an intimidating forward, but his intelligence makes him a difficult man to mark. He is an esteemed member of a Filipino professional football club, Davao Aguilas and will look to carry his impressive club form into the Asian Cup.

1. Sunil Chhetri – 67 Goals – India

Sunil Chhetri

The prolific Indian skipper, Sunil Chhetri, sits pretty at the top of our list and by a very handsome margin. Arguably the most decorated player in the history of Indian football, Chhetri, overtook Lionel Messi to climb up to second in the international top goalscorers’ list with his brace over Thailand, last Sunday and we hope to see more from him over the next few weeks.
