Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone was lavish in his praise for Koke’s performance in the hard fought draw against Sevilla, claiming that the player did a great job even in a position that he is not used to playing in.
Simeone’s team fell behind after Wissam Ben Yedder gave the hosts a deserved lead, only for Antoine Griezmann to level the scores from a free kick just before half time. The draw meant that Atletico could not reduce their deficit to league leaders Barcelona but stay two points ahead of Sevilla.
However, the head coach reserved special praise for Koke after he was moved to a position that he was not used to, so that the team could repel the attacks being made by Jesus Navas and Joris Gnagnon on the right.
“You could see that they were hurting us down their right flank,” said Simeone, according to Goal.
“We changed Koke’s position because tactically he’s extraordinary. He did a great job in a position he’s not used to. After that, everything changed.”
“It was a great game,” he added. “Sevilla are very strong at home and there were periods in which both teams dominated.
“We didn’t attack very well in the first half but we improved greatly after the break. I think the way in which we reacted deserves praise.”
Atletico next play Levante in the La Liga and will be hoping to get all three points so that they can remain in touch with Barcelona and hope the defending champions drop a few points in the near future.
