Victor Font, a leading candidate for the Barcelona presidency, has backed the club legend Xavi to become the vice-president of the Catalan giants in the future, claiming that, “I hope he can lead our footballing project.”
The 39-year-old who left Barcelona in 2015 after spending 17 years with the senior team is currently playing in Qatar for Al Sadd SC, though he is expected to retire in the immediate future.
Font, who has been backed by the likes of former skipper Carles Puyol and major club sponsor Grifols for the presidency in 2021, believes that Xavi would be the perfect individual to work with the club.
“I’m in tune with Xavi, in relation to the project, and personally I love talking to him about football. I hope he can lead our footballing project. We have a lot of challenges for the next five or 10 years,” he said as quoted by the Mirror.
“A key one, and one of the first, is the management of the end of Lionel Messi (as he gets towards retiring).”
Xavi made a record 767 appearances for the club and if he does get the vice-presidency role, it will be interesting to see how he handles the retirement of his former teammate and the greatest player in Barcelona’s history.
