Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde believes that a strong run in the Copa del Rey is not a bad thing for the team, amid suggestions that participating in the cup could scupper their chances of winning La Liga.
The Catalan side had managed to do that in the previous campaign, having won both the La Liga and the Copa del Rey, but fell to AS Roma in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
However, Valverde feels that a cup run shouldn’t be a problem for his team, and insisted that they want to win every competition that they play in, irrespective of the status it holds.
“The team looks good,” he told reporters, according to Goal. “We just had a break, the players had some rest, and everybody was able to charge their batteries.
“If we have a lot of cup matches coming up that’s good, because it means we’re going through.
“People are saying a cup run could cause us a problem but I’m not so convinced about that. Last season we might have dropped a point or two.”
“It’s true the games come all at once and we have to make changes but the excitement for the club means a lot to us. Everyone loves playing in semi-finals and finals. We have to go for it. We want to win La Liga and the Copa del Rey, too.”
It remains to be seen if Barcelona can win the Copa del Rey yet again, having already won the tournament for the last four seasons. They now have 30 Copa titles in their kitty after their win last season.
