Atletico Madrid boss, Diego Simeone, saw his side succumb to a shock 1-0 defeat at Real Betis on Sunday afternoon, but was impressed by the effort put in by new signing Alvaro Morata.
Instead of capitalising on Barcelona’s misfortunes — a 2-2 draw with Valencia on Saturday — the Madrid outfit ended up extending the Blaugrana’s advantage at the top of the table to six points.
Two controversial penalty decision headlined Sunday’s encounter at the Benito Villamarin Stadium. Los Rojiblancos were denied a penalty minutes before Real Betis won a penalty for themselves, which Sergio Canales put past Jan Oblak quite convincingly.
Simeone didn’t want to dwell on the decisions and provided a rather subdued response after his side fell to an unexpected defeat at Betis.
“I don’t think it’s fair to talk about it [the penalty decisions] after a defeat,” said Simeone.
“You saw it clearly.”
The match saw Rojiblancos’ newest acquisition, Alvaro Morata, make his debut. His first match in an Atletico shirt didn’t go as planned, but Simeone was content with what he saw.
“I’m talking about the team,” he added, as quoted by Football.London.
“There were few occasions for the two [up top – Morata and Antoine Griezmann]. We could not find solutions when the game grew to a close.”
“Morata had an important job in his first game. Let’s hope he continues to contribute.”
Atletico’s next La Liga commitment sees them welcome crosstown rivals and Morata’s former employers, Real Madrid, to the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday.
