Barcelona and Spain defender Gerard Pique has welcomed the opportunity to work with manager Ernesto Valverde for one more year, after it was revealed that the Spaniard’s contract expires at the end of the next season.

It was originally thought that Valverde’s contract with the club would expire at the end of the current campaign, but club president Josep Maria Bartomeu has clarified that it has one more year, although both parties have the option to terminate early.

Pique, for his part, would be more than happy to work with the current manager for an additional year, claiming that the team is delighted with the work he has done.

“It’s a decision that he will make and we will respect because he is the coach,” Pique said, according to Goal.

“We would be delighted if he decided to continue and he is doing a magnificent job.

“He brings calmness and he is producing results and showing that his way works.”

Barcelona eased to a 2-1 win over Getafe thanks to goals from Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, and increased their lead at the top of the table to five points.

“I don’t know if it’s a major blow to La Liga, in terms of the points between us and the rivals,” Pique said.

“It’s always good to come back from the Christmas break with a win. I think it’s years since we did it.”

Atletico Madrid will rue their draw against Sevilla, as a win would have put them three points behind Barcelona but will now have to hope that the defending champions will drop some points in the near future.
