Real Madrid will look to regain second spot in La Liga table when they welcome Girona to the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday morning. Santiago Solari’s men have won their last five Spanish top-flight fixtures and will fancy themselves to extend their fine run against an out-of-form Girona side.

Here are three things to look forward to as Madrid take on Girona on Sunday.

3. Girona’s Poor Form

The Catalan outfit started the season in fine fashion and looked on course for a respectable mid-table finish. However, things haven’t been that pleasant in recent weeks. Girona, who finished 10th in their first ever La Liga campaign in 2017/18, have not won a league match since winning at Espanyol in November.

They were also comprehensively beaten by Madrid in the Copa del Rey this season, and will probably need a miracle to get something out of Sunday’s trip.

2. Madrid Full of Confidence

Karim Benzema

The 2018/19 season has been a roller-coaster for Real Madrid. Following Julen Lopetegui’s disastrous stint, it took a bit of time for Madrid to find their feet.

Last couple of months have helped Madrid’s cause. They are finally looking sharp and seem capable of going toe to toe with the finest teams in Europe. The Los Blancos are coming into the match on the back of a hard-fought win at Ajax, and should not find many difficulties against a team they have already beaten thrice this season.

1. Chance for Asensio?

Marco Asensio

Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, Real Madrid needed someone inspiring on their left flank, both Marco Asensio and Gareth Bale suffered unfortunate injuries, allowing Vinicius Jr to hog the limelight. Now that the Spaniard is back in action, there could be a tussle down the left.

Vinicius has played tirelessly over the last month could be rested on Sunday morning, and Asensio, who scored the winner against Ajax last Wednesday, must make the most of the opportunity.
