Footballing superstar Lionel Messi continued his good form into 2019, scoring one goal as Barcelona beat Getafe 2-1 in their opening game of the new year to maintain their lead at the top of the La Liga table.
Their win along with rivals Real Madrid losing to Real Sociedad has seen them move 10 points ahead of the Los Blancos, with the side placed fifth. Following their win, a new statistic has emerged which shows how brilliant Messi has been this season, while Madrid have struggled.

The Argentinian has scored 16 goals in the league this season, while also registering 10 assists which means that he has contributed to 26 goals for the Catalan giants. This number is the same as the total goals scored by Madrid in the league, with the defending European champions netting only 26 goals in La Liga so far.
These numbers are amazing considering that Messi missed a couple of games in the league due to a broken arm in October and he would no doubt have registered higher numbers. The 31-year-old will look to add to his tally when he and Barcelona will be in action against Levante on Thursday, the 10th of January.
