Liverpool legend John Barnes believes the team will not succumb to pressure in the race for the Premier League title, believing that teams at the top will continue to drop points against various teams as the season progresses.
Manchester City lost to Newcastle United during the mid-week game, giving the opportunity for Liverpool to take a commanding seven point lead in the title race. However, they only managed to get a draw against Leicester City, with the lead now up to five points.
Barnes does not think that it was pressure and nervousness for the draw, instead claiming that both teams will continue to drop points and won’t be a case of last season where City went so far ahead that nobody could catch them.
It’s not all doom and gloom,” he told talkSPORT. “It was a great opportunity to go seven points clear, but we’ve added another point.
“It’s only January and teams, including Liverpool and Manchester City, will drop more points. We’re not going to have another situation like last year where City went so far ahead of everybody else and didn’t drop points.
“Liverpool drawing against a struggling Leicester team, City losing to a struggling Newcastle team – this happens in the Premier League.
“So I’d rather see this as a point gained. Yes, it’s an opportunity lost to go seven clear, but we’re one point further ahead.”
It remains to be seen who will be the first to blink next, with City set to play Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium while Liverpool face West Ham United.
