Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has praised the defensive brain of Fabinho after their narrow 1-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion, with the player drafted in to play at centre-back due to a lack of defenders.
Fabinho played alongside Virgil van Dijk in defence and made some important blocks during the game that ensured Liverpool kept a clean sheet, as well as getting them all three points on the night.
Klopp was happy with Fabinho’s performance, claiming that because the player has a defensive brain, he can play at the back without any problem if the team needs it.
“Fabinho is a brilliant player,” said Klopp, according to Goal. “To have a good footballer in that position when you have the ball is great.
“It was not one attack after another, we had the ball most of the time.
“But Brighton tried to bring the long balls around Glenn Murray, like with Joe Gomez in the home game – but he did well in these situations as well.
“He has a defensive brain and can play in a lot of positions.”
Liverpool struggled to break down Brighton on the night, but a little bit of trickery from Mohamed Salah earned them a penalty, with the Egyptian duly dispatched to give the team the all important goal.
It remains to be seen if Manchester City can win their game and ensure the deficit to the top does not go beyond the current four points, considering they play a Wolverhampton Wanderers side they could only draw with last time round.
