Real Madrid midfielder, Luka Modric, has asked his teammates to stop looking for excuses and take responsibility for their poor performances this season. The Los Blancos were handed a shock 2-0 home defeat by Real Sociedad on Sunday night, with Willian Jose and Ruben Pardo getting on the scoresheet for the visitors.

The result threw Madrid out of a Champions League spot, while also putting them further behind  league leaders, Barcelona, who now have a 10-point advantage over their bitter rivals.

Modric was visibly frustrated after the match and asked Madrid to up the ante.

“Many of us are not at our level,” Modric said in the mixed zone, as quoted by Marca.

“We cannot take a s*** at the beginning of every game. We have to be clear, it’s not a matter of luck. We are creating a lot but the ball won’t go in and we are giving a lot but there are reasons that explain why things are not going well.”

“We have to improve a lot and we’re not in an ideal moment. We have to be closer and as more of a team on the pitch. It is important to take things game by game and not talk about whether the league is lost.”

Madrid’s next outing sees them welcome Leganes to the Santiago Bernabeu on Thursday night in the first leg of the last-16 of the Copa del Rey.
