Manchester United legend Roy Keane has expressed his doubts over new signing Harry Maguire, and said that he still has concerns over the central defender’s abilities despite his impact since joining the club.
Maguire joined United from Leicester City for £80million in the summer transfer window, making him the most expensive defender ahead of Liverpool and Holland’s Virgil van Dijk.
The player has had a big impact since joining the club, but Keane has maintained that he does not have the kind of defensive abilities that would see him give the same kind of performances that Van Dijk has on a consistent basis.
“I think he’s done OK,” Keane told ITV, according to Goal. “We were talking about how good he is on the ball, but defensively I still think he’s… I still have one or two question marks over him. I always worry about his pace on the turn, I remember the first goal against Crystal Palace where he’s not doing the basics – covering round his other centre-half. Listen he’s 26 years of age now, you’re worried if you’re pointing these things out to him.”
However, Arsenal legend Ian Wright does not agree with Keane’s assessment and thinks that Maguire is worth the money that Manchester United have paid for him.
“He’s a good footballer, he’s a very good footballer,” the former striker said. “He’s gone up the leagues, he’s got better. Now he’s got to Man Utd and it’s the pinnacle really. They’ve paid that money for him because he’s worth the money.”
