Manchester United are reportedly looking at Barcelona centre-back Samuel Umtiti as an alternative option in case they are unable to sign Harry Maguire.

The Frenchman has returned to action fully fit after missing a big chunk of last season due to a knee injury. He has played a part in both of the Blaugrana‘s pre-season matches and has looked good in his time on the field.

However, his future at the Camp Nou outfit has now come into question after French publication Le10Sport reported, as per FourFourTwo, that United are looking at Umtiti as an alternative to Maguire.

The Red Devils have been interested in signing the English central defender and have pursued him throughout the summer. However, they have not been able to agree a fee with the Foxes, as they have been quoted an exorbitant sum of £90 million.

United made a bid of £70 million earlier in the summer but Leicester rejected that. They have stood firm in their stance as they do not need to sell the 26-year-old to balance their books.

With just eight more days left in the English transfer window, Manchester United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has a huge task on his hands as he works to finalise the deal for a central defender and the potential arrivals of Bruno Fernandes and Paulo Dybala, the latter as part of a swap deal with Juventus, which would see Romelu Lukaku going the other way.

Although United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made Maguire as his top priority, the fact that they have not been able to pull off a deal as yet has made them switch their focus to Umtiti.

Barcelona value him at €60 million reportedly and Manchester United are said to be ready to pay upto €50 million to secure his signature. Considering the disparity, it is quite possible that both teams sit down to reach a settlement.
