​Colombia’s new national team manager Carlos Queiroz has issued a stark warning to star player James Rodriguez, claiming that, “a player of his calibre needs to be playing as much as possible.”

The 27-year-old who was vital to the their league title win last season, has found himself out of favour under manager Niko Kovac in the current campaign, with the Colombian struggling for gametime, with Kovac instead opting for the likes of Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry in midfield.

Queiroz, who left his post as the coach of Iran following their run to the semifinals of the AFC Asian Cup to take up the role at Colombia, believes that it is very important for a player of Rodriguez’s talent to be playing as much as possible.

“I will need to talk to James. For a player of his calibre he needs to be playing as much as possible, that’s very important. But when you have a chance to play for Real [Madrid], Manchester United or Bayern [Munich], sometimes players have to make sacrifices,” he said as ​quoted by Goal.

“I want to talk to him soon, though.”
