Reigning European champions Real Madrid are believed to be aggressively scouting SL Benfica starlet Joao Felix who is touted to be the ‘next Cristiano Ronaldo’ according to fans and scouts who have watched him feature in Portugal.
The 19-year-old attacking midfielder has attracted interest from Barcelona, Manchester United, Atletico, PSG, Bayern and Juventus which is why Real Madrid are strategising by moving early for the player ahead of their competitors.
The Portuguese media hail the 19-year-old attacking midfielder as “Hurricane Félix” after he went on to become the youngest-ever player to score in a Lisbon derby, at the start of the season.
Scouts from Barcelona, Atletico, Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund were present when Felix featured as Benfica hosted Boavista on January 29. The youngster did not disappoint as he scored the opening goal, provided the assist for the third and started the move for the fourth as Benfica thrashed Boavista 5-1 on the night.
A week after that game, he scored as well as assisted one goal in Benfica’s 4-2 away victory at bitter rivals Sporting, completing a club double for the season in the Lisbon derby. He also won a penalty and had a goal disallowed after a VAR decision.
AS report that Benfica received a 60-million-euro offer from an undisclosed Premier League club for Felix in January. They responded by handing him a pay rise and hiking his release clause to 120 million euros while extending his contract until 2023.
The fact that some scouts have described Felix’s potential as on a par with Kylian Mbappe is something that has boggled every top club’s mind with regards to their approach towards the player.
