Carabao Cup holders Manchester City host Burton Albion in the first leg of the semi-final on Wednesday night.
The tie, which is being described as a David vs. Goliath encounter has all the traditional romance of English cup competitions, as sides from the lower leagues defy the odds to reach the latter stages of tournaments.
Here is 90min’s best potential Manchester City XI for the semi-final clash.
3. Goalkeepers and Defenders
Ederson (GK) – Despite not featuring in the Carabao Cup thus far, Ederson is expected to be reinstated in the line up, with Pep Guardiola going all out to secure City’s spot in the final.
Kyle Walker (RB) – Walker has featured for just eight minutes in his last two Premier League appearances, although did complete the full 90 against Rotherham at the weekend. Considering City’s attacking prowess, the defender is yet to notch an assist all season.
John Stones (CB) – Stones has become a staple of this City defensive unit. He is yet to score for his club side this season, but may fancy his chances against League One opposition here.
Nicolás Otamendi (CB) – Otamendi has been limited to just seven Premier League starts this term, and was bought on for the final two minutes against Liverpool. However, he did play the full 90 and get on the scoresheet in the 7-0 dismantling of Rotherham.
Oleksandr Zinchenko (LB) – Expected to get another start, Zinchenko will be hoping to build on positive performances. The young full-back has two assists to his name this term and will be aiming to be a threat going forward again.
Phil Foden (CM) – Young midfielder Foden has featured 10 times for the Citizens this term. He repaid the faith shown in him by Guardiola by netting in the 7-0 victory over Rotherham and may retain his spot here.
David Silva (CM) – Bringing a bit of class to the party is David Silva. Now aged 33, Silva has been one of the all time greats for City, and his return of nine goals in 20 appearances shows he clearly still has it.
Kevin De Bruyne (CM) – After returning to full fitness Kevin De Bruyne is expected to complete his first 90 minutes of the season against Burton. The last time he managed this feat was Belgium’s 2-0 over England in the World Cup.
Raheem Sterling (RW) – Showing no signs of leaving the big guns out, Guardiola is expected to start Sterling on the right wing. The Englishman has been in terrific form this term, scoring 11 goals and registering eight assists in all club competitions so far.
Leroy Sane (LW) – After scoring the winner against Liverpool, Sane grabbed another goal against Rotherham to take his tally to 10 for the season. He has also racked up an impressive seven assists and looks to be back to his best.
Sergio Aguero (ST) – Contributing a goal or assist in each of his last three appearances, Aguero is starting to reach top form, which is only bad news for the Burton back line. He has managed 13 goals in 20 appearances, as the race to reach the 20 goal landmark first heats up in the City dressing room.
