Football legend Rivaldo has expressed his disappointment for Argentina and understands their anger at the referees after they weren’t awarded two penalties in their 2-0 loss against Brazil in the Copa America semi-final.
Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino scored in Brazil’s win in the 19th and 71st minute of the game. After the encounter, Lionel Scaloni and Lionel Messi did not hold back in their criticism of the refereeing standards at the tournament. Rivaldo believes they are right in doing so.
As reported by Marca, while speaking with regards to Argentina’s Copa America campaign as a whole in his interview with Betfair, Rivaldo said, “Of course Argentina have reasons to complain.”
🗣 Rivaldo: “Before Argentina was a great team with a lot of incredible players, but now it’s only Messi, so the opponents know that to stop him, they have everything almost resolved. If Messi had coincided with another generation, surely he would have won something.”

He continued by revealing the two contentious decisions that went against Argentina, “Brazil have a better team right now, but there were two penalties in their favour and VAR didn’t intervene.”
Rivaldo then specified why he has always been against the concept of VAR as he concluded, “I’ve been saying for a long time that I don’t agree with VAR. It hurts football to have so many stoppages and it only benefits referees, who now delegate responsibility. If in Europe it causes chaos then it’s normal that there are even more frequent problems in South America.”
Meanwhile, Lionel Messi will now look to dust off another critical loss with Argentina as he heads on to his summer break before returning with FC Barcelona for the next domestic season.
