Tottenham Hotspur legend Ossie Ardiles has implored the club to let midfielder Christian Eriksen leave for Real Madrid if he wants to, saying that it would be futile to keep a player that was not committed to the team.
Eriksen was one of the players linked with a move to Madrid after the previous season ended as part of the Spanish club’s overhaul following a difficult and disappointing campaign. However, no offer has been forthcoming so far, even as the player himself said he was ready for a new challenge.
Ardiles believes that Erisksen is no longer fully committed to the club’s cause and as such there should be no attempts made to try and keep him from leaving.
He told talkSPORT: “It looks to me like he has put his mind on a move – that he wants to go somewhere else. And if that is the case it’s futile for the club to try and keep a player when he wants to leave. I won’t say he’s not happy with us, because he is, but his mind is trying to play somewhere else, and the best thing is to part company.”
The club legend also said that it looks the focus of the hierarchy as well as the manager was towards the future, and that the manager is looking for players who are younger.
He added: “People were speculating about who Mauricio was going to buy, but no one has the slightest clue except for Mauricio. But you can see right now the way he does things; he likes to buy young players and put a lot of his influence on them, and take it from there. People like Dele Alli for example.”
