Cristiano Ronaldo began 2020 in spectacular fashion, scoring a well-taken hattrick against Cagliari to help Juventus seal a 4-0 win and briefly overtake Inter Milan at the top of the Serie A pile.
The Portuguese marksman had endured his worst goal scoring season of the decade in 2019, managing only 39 goals all year. As a result, he also missed out on adding to his incredible tally of five Ballon d’Or trophies, allowing arch rival Lionel Messi to collect his sixth. In fact, he didn’t even finish in the top two, with Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk taking the spot.
Perhaps as a result of that, Ronaldo was itching to make a point and kick off 2020 in the grandest fashion possible – and he did just that.
After a tepid first half after which the teams went in at 0-0, much to the displeasure of the Juventus fans, Ronaldo sprang into life in the second 45.
His predatory instincts were on full display as he intercepted a wayward pass from a Cagliari defender to round the ‘keeper and score his and Juventus’ first of the night.
He then followed that up by slotting home a penalty that Paulo Dybala had won after his fanciful footwork elicited a foul in the box. Ronaldo then teed up Gonzalo Higuain to score with a fine assist before tapping in Douglas Costa’s pass at the far post to complete his hattrick.
Naturally, Twitter was alight with praise for a man who scored his 36th club hattrick, also making him the second player ever to score hattricks in Serie A, La Liga and the Premier League – and create a number of other records in the process!
Cristiano Ronaldo: “When I played on the streets of Madeira and dreamed of reaching the top of football, I could not imagine that one day I would take a photo like this. It has been a blessing.”
